So, this evening I finally got a chance to document some of the
broken and missing parts to my $300 1980 Puch Magnum II.
This is part one of a who knows how many part series. I'm sure
to run into more broken / missing parts as I restore this bike.
It is not my aim to return this bike to it's original state. I've seen
a lot of interesting modifications to these mopeds and I intend
to create my own. Hopefully soon I'll post photos of other
Puch Magnum rebuilds as inspiration.
Even before seeing the bike in person I knew that the Magnum was
incomplete. However the missing parts for this bike were nothing
crucial in my opinion. Among the initial list of missing parts were the
tail light lens cover, exhaust pipe, gas line,
Looking closer at the bike now in my living room, I found
several more issues regarding the condition of my new
moped. Included are:
severely corroded and bent front wheel,
bent steering restrictor,
resulting tank folds,
dents,
missing original tool box,
broken speedometer,
bent pedal crank arm,
and scratched paint on the seat trunk compartment.
My biggest concern is with the bent steering restrictor.
The tank is scratched due to the non-functioning restrictor,
which allows the handle bar supports swing wildly and bend
and scratch the gas tank. My plan is to either heat up and
then bend it back in place and /or add a supporting plate.
Let me know if you have ever dealt with this unfortunate
situation.
i own a 1980 puch magnum 2 i bought it when i was 17 and have had it for about 10 years now it was in near mint condition when i got it surprisingly. i ended up crashing it shortly after i got it drunk being a dumb kid ya know... anywayi was lucky it wasnt more damageed but in the crash i bent the pedal, and cant remember what else i believe i bent the frame as well but i put the pedal in a vice and with excessive force was able to bend it back. Im also doing work to my magnum as well and looking to fully restore it and make it faster i know a website called the moped junkyard based out of ocean city md if you are looking to get any after market parts but im looking for originals myself, if you know a place let me know upser1j@yahoo.com good luck with fixing her up!
