Honda Express Woes: Oil Leak in Gas Tank

So when my girlfriend and I were getting geared up to ride our mopeds
over to my brother's house for my nephew's 1st birthday party, we
were shocked to discover this:

Apparently all the 2-stroke oil had leaked out of the gas tank on the
Honda Express. Upon further inspection and after refilling the tank
with a new batch of oil I made a gruesome discovery.

The oil was leaking from the refill indicator window on the left
side of fuel tank. I didn't have the patience to deal with this
problem this weekend. I do have an extra Express tank, though
I stripped it of paint and primed it. I think i'm going to try and
remove the indicator window and reseal the gasket. Anyone ever
have experience with this? Let me know. Bummer.

  1. I assume you got the Honda Express tank swapped out. Were you able to repair the previous tank? If so, how? Pics? This info would be helpful in case that ever happens to my 1978 Honda Express nc 50 moped.

  3. I fixed my problem. I took the gasket/glass ball out. Cut a round peice of aluminum to fit over hole. I painted it with some orange paint I had at my store, then used a product called jb stix. Epoxied it on and ta da, done. Works perfect. Only down side is you cant see your oil lvl. Doesnt matter bc I switched to pre-mix and like it much better. Stock runs about 20:1 and im doing a 40:1 pre-mix now. I have a pic but dont know how to load it on this site. If you want it contact me at joshm886@gmail.com I will be happy to send it and help you if you have any questions. Overall a very easy fix. Got the aluminum for free off some scrap. I work at a paint store so the primer and orange paint was free. The jb stix was about 6 bucks, but thats all I had in this fix.

  4. I tried to take the seal out and ended up pushing it in. I will also close the hole up with a round piece of metal and some epoxy. Those windows are not available anywhere.
